How to Get Health Insurance If you're uninsured or Just Not Sure

If you recently lost your job or are self employed or working as a freelancer, you may not have health insurance. You're not alone. Hundreds of thousands are not insured for financial reasons.

Others may stay in jobs they hate because I need the health benefits "and they worry about what to do if they make the transition. You're not alone either more. Good health is a huge priority. Otherwise, everything else can fall apart.

I am a strong advocate of taking preventive health measures. But part of preventive measures is to make you see your doctor for general examinations and annual follow-ups, and to see a doctor when you know something is wrong.

As it can be difficult to navigate where to get health insurance for those moments, I thought the following might help you.

The American Diabetes Association has developed a Resource Guide very useful for you. I used New York here, since you're likely to stay there but you can get the same information to clarify while clicking on your state on the red card on their website.

The following details information health insurance and assistance programs available to uninsured people in New York.

If you currently have health insurance or are losing health insurance coverage within 60 days, visit the insurance section of Health website of the American Diabetes Association for the options available to you.

New York Insurance Department - (800) 342-3736

Residents of New York can not be refused to buy an insurance policy individual health independently of any health condition that they may have. This is called guaranteed issue. In addition, residents can not be charged higher rates for their policies because of their health. This is called community rating. The New York Insurance Department may be able to help you find the names and phone numbers of possible insurers who will sell you this type of policy. Please contact them for more information.

If you encounter a problem with your state-regulated health plan and you are unable to resolve directly with the plan, file a complaint with the Department of Insurance. They may be able to provide assistance in reaching a conclusion.

New York Health Insurance Guide Available

The New York Consumer Guide to Health Insurers provide information on the wide range of options available health care in the state and allows New Yorkers to compare commercial insurers and non-profit health and the Maintenance Organizations Health Organization (HMO) on a variety of factors, services offered to overall consumer satisfaction. This guide can help you find the best plan of care for you and your family.

Medicaid is available to anyone who meets income and eligibility criteria. Even if your income meets the criteria, you must enter a category of eligibility to qualify. Contact your state Medicaid program for more information.

The objective of the Healthy NY program is to provide health insurance coverage for eligible individuals insured employment and self-employed. This program is also available to small businesses that do not currently offer the health insurance coverage to their employees. You must meet certain eligibility criteria for income eligibility. Child Health Plus (CHPLUS) - State Children's Health Insurance Program --

Child Health Plus is a health insurance program designed to provide health insurance for children and adolescents under age 19 whose family may have too much income to qualify for Medicaid, but who may not be able to paid health insurance. Visit the website to see if you or your child meets the income criteria.

New York, Family Health Plus - 1-877-934-7587

Family Health Plus is a program of health care for uninsured adults aged between 19 and 64 who have incomes too high to qualify for New York 's Medicaid program. Family Health Plus is available for single people, couples without children and parents with limited incomes. They must meet the residence qualifications of Immigration certain to qualify.

If you or your loved one is unable to see a doctor because the cost of care, there may be a community health clinic in your local area. These clinics generally are free or require a very low pay for patients to receive care. Find a clinic in your area.
